City Proposes Changes to Fair Housing Regs in Grand Rapids
Public Hearing April 23 at 7:00 p.m. at the City Commission Chambers
As part of a new Human Rights ordinance, the City of Grand Rapids will tweak its existing ordinances regarding fair housing. The ordinance would require rental property owners to use caution when screening applicants with a criminal record. The new changes as proposed would essentially adopt the guidelines as issued by HUD several years ago. In short, the change requires that property owners use a screening process that takes into account the type of crime committed and how long ago the crime was committed and whether or not the applicant would pose a threat to the health and safety of the neighborhood.
