Did Someone Die in Your House (Before You Bought It)?
When you’re researching a property, have you ever wondered, “did someone ever die or get killed here?” An eerie online site called DiedInHouse.com will, for a small fee, generate a report using millions of records to determine if a death occurred at any valid U.S. address.
Renting and selling a home where someone died can be more challenging. Often this fact doesn’t arise until the new owner or tenant moves in and the neighbors decide that it would be fun to say something like, “did you know about the grisly murders that took place in your house?” (Thanks Mr. Dramatic!) Whether or not a seller has to disclose a death in the home depends on where you’re buying the property. In Michigan, sellers and agents do not have to disclose a death at the property being sold.
