Support Animal Bills Introduced to Stop Abuse
Two bills have been introduced into the Michigan House that would make it more difficult for tenants to falsify the need for emotional support animals. HB 4910 creates regulations that would require a prescription and request for reasonable accommodation for emotional support animals. HB 4911 provides for early lease termination due to misrepresentation of emotional support animals. Both of these bills, if passed, would go a long way to eliminating the abuse by tenants. Both were referred to House Regulatory Reform on September 3rd.
Other bills are expected to be introduced that would further tighten when a person can claim a disability and need for an emotional support animal and allow property owners/managers to request documentation to prove a legitimate medical need.
The RPOA of Michigan is following the bills and is providing support.
